Platinum Dirt VIN Jackets

They’re not in stores yet, but these ultra-cool old-school ’70s-style leather jackets damn sure ought to be. They’re the fashion creation of Dustin Page, an Adams Point–based clothing designer by night and an SF ad agency digital artist by day who came up with the brilliant idea of repurposing leather seats from spent Cadillacs and Lincolns. Page transforms the leather of the rear seats into boxy jackets, incorporating the dead car’s vehicle identification number into the garment, and attaching the ginormous hood ornaments of the junkers as the bling for the zipper pull. Page scouts junkyards for the cars, reclaims the leather, pries off the VIN, and then constructs the stiff coats. A hired seamstress puts the pieces together and lines them with attractive brocade. Page, who can tells customers how to research the history of the auto, sells his labor-intensive cowhide creations for $1,200 via his web site or $2,000 retail. Next up: VIN accessories.
