It’s hard to imagine a more quintessentially Berkeley business than the Juice Bar Collective. It has been owned and operated by its employees since opening in 1976, uses eco-friendly practices in its business operations, and makes its juices and pastries with almost entirely organic ingredients. But beyond all of its Berzerkeley-ness, it’s also got the best fresh juice around. Its organic carrot and orange juices are always made to order, and contain just the right amount of sweetness without any added sugar. If you want to mix it up a bit (pun intended), you can get the fifty/fifty orange and carrot juice blend or add kale, fresh ginger, beets, celery, apple, strawberries (when in season), protein powder, and/or spirulina powder as well. The carrot, kale, and beet blend is especially delicious when accompanied by the collective’s famous black bean polenta. The joint is tiny and doesn’t have much seating, but there are a couple tables outside, and there’s always Live Oak Park just a few blocks away if you want to turn your meal into a picnic in true North Berkeley style.
