Kelly Anneken and Isa Hopkins, founders of Oakland sketch comedy troupe Femikaze, make advocating for equal representation — of women, queers, people of color, and people of all body types in comedy — well, a hilariously good time. When they’re not relaying true stories about slipping in human feces on BART, retelling fairytales with a queer twist, or lovingly ripping on NPR, Hopkins and Anneken are running the online humor journal Hobo Pancakes and hosting readings of their gender-bending screenplay about FBI agents scouting out a white supremacist cult in rural Idaho. As if that’s not enough, Anneken also acts as host of Monday Night Comedy at Farley’s East and curator of Pandora’s comedy station. Just a couple of Midwestern gals promoting the “radical notion that women are funny,” these comedy innovators couldn’t be more at home in the East Bay.
