East Bay Children's Book Project

“Books are a uniquely portable magic,” Stephen King once said, and anyone who has had a truly transforming experience with a book would agree — a good one can change everything (where were you when you read Catcher in the Rye? Their Eyes Were Watching God? Heck, even Carrie?) But books can be scarce for city kids, and encouraging children to read just doesn’t work if material isn’t available. That’s where the East Bay Children’s Book Project steps in. Since it opened in Mosswood Recreation Center eight years ago, the organization has distributed more than 850,000 free books to children with little or no access to the written word. The project makes books of all sorts available to eager readers — board and picture books, chapter books, young adult fiction and nonfiction, reference tomes, and more; the books are distributed through teachers, social workers, and community groups. East Bay Children’s Book Project takes donations of cash or books (in good condition, and no textbooks, religious, or library books, please) and will help local schools or businesses organize a collection. Donate a book to an East Bay kid — it’s sure to work its wonder.
