Best Alphabetical Performance Artist

Julie Caffey

The alphabet. Ho hum. No innovation for thousands of years, at least, that is, until local-girl-turned-performance-artist Julie Caffey’s Alpha-Brick solo monologue hit the Bay Area last November at the ODC Theater in San Francisco. In the piece, Caffey gives voice to characters who relate their alternatively truculent and poignant memories — in alphabetical order. Tall, curvy, and honey-haired, Caffey exudes a gritty charisma shot through with playfulness. And Alpha-Brick isn’t her only rumination on the 26 letters that make English hum; she’s also written and performed a show called Alphabet-Obit and another titled Alphabet Report (as well as a ton of other pieces, too). A founding member of Moving Stories Performance Ensemble, Caffey also performs with InterPlay’s WingIt! Performance Ensemble. In a culture hurtling more and more toward the visual, away from language, it’s comforting to know people like Caffey are guarding the abecedarian flame.
