Getting Their Kicks

FRI 8/19

Still smarting from being knocked out of the first round of the NCAA tournament last November by Santa Clara, the Cal women’s soccer team (11-6-3 overall last year) makes its preseason debut — the very first intercollegiate contest of the 2005-06 school year — this Friday against Sacramento State. Coach Kevin Boyd’s squad should get a lift from the play of midfielder Chioma Igwe and forward/midfielder Caroline Lea, both of whom participated in the U-20 category of the US Women’s Soccer Mega-Camp held in May. Match time is 11 a.m. Friday at Edwards Stadium on the UC campus. Info: CalBears.collegesports.comKelly Vance

Chase the Dragonfly

Over the hills of Lake Chabot Park

Cross-country foot racing is different from your ordinary 10K road race — runners have to cover a lot of uneven ground, negotiating turf, hills, dirt and gravel trails, even the occasional stream. Stragglers sometimes get lost. Are you up for some off-road chuffing? The 2005 Dragonfly Challenge & 5K Run can provide Saturday at Lake Chabot Regional Park in Castro Valley. The second annual event offers both a three-mile “meet” plus a 5K run over a hilly patch of scenery around Lake Chabot, with medals awarded to the top three finishers in a variety of age and gender groups, including a High School three-mile race for under-eighteens.

Registration opens at 7 a.m., with races at 8:30 and 9 a.m. at the park, 17930 Lake Chabot Road, Castro Valley, but online preregistration (go to Active.com/event_detail.cfm?

) closes Thursday at midnight. Volunteers are needed for the race — e-mail the race director at [email protected]Kelly Vance

SUN 8/21

Be a Fishin’ Magician

Hey, outdoorsy water sports types: You can combine two fun activities — kayaking and fishing — this Sunday at California Canoe and Kayak’s Kayak Fishing Demo Day. From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at San Pablo Reservoir in El Sobrante (7301 San Pablo Dam Rd.), visitors can learn the fine points of fishing from a kayak, take a “test drive” in a new Hobie Cat kayak rigged for fishing, and find out the reservoir’s best fishing spots (well, maybe) from expert kayak angler Tim Crane (he comes on at 1 p.m.). He might even explain what kind of tackle to use and when. Best of all, this two-sport how-to day is free and open to the public. All you have to do is pay the reservoir’s $6.50 parking fee. Before you go, get more info from Ryan Henbest at 510-893-7833 ex. 12, or from CalKayak.comKelly Vance
