Artists and curators like to say “It’s the process that counts,” but in an object-worshipping world, that rarely ends up actually being the case. Always pushing boundaries, the Mills College Art Museum (5000 MacArthur Blvd., Oakland) attempts to own up to that adage with its Artist + Process + Ideas artist residency. The program, which hosts three artists for six months, encourages participants to focus on research and conceptualization and not worry so much about the end result. That doesn’t mean it doesn’t end in a show, though. The culminating exhibition for the most recent residents, Carrie Hott, K.r.m. Mooney, and Surabhi Saraf, opens on June 22 with a reception from 6–8 p.m. and will run through August 28. Hott’s work will be exploring the possibility of creating a home for “fugitive objects,” Mooney will be placing subtle interventions into the museum’s architecture, and Saraf will be investigating “immobile intensities” through work based in incredibly slow movement. The opening will feature a performance by Saraf as well. Although it’s odd to recommend a show based on a lack of pressure to perform, that dedication to process will likely pay off in the form of exceptionally thoughtful conceptual works.
