Age Discrimination at Lawrence Livermore?

At a Dublin press conference, attorneys for more than 100 former Lawrence Livermore Lab employees announced they are filing claims of age discrimination against the consortium that runs the lab. The complaint dates back to last year, when the employees were among 440 people laid off from the institute. The employees, which consist of everyone from janitors to scientists, claim that lab overseers targeted them because as befits their senior positions, they drew larger salaries and were closer to retirement. In so doing, they allegedly violated promises that layoffs would respect seniority rules. According to the Chronicle, the employees must first file their claims with a state agency before getting permission to go to the courts. A spokesperson for the lab consortium, which includes the University of California and Bechtel, insists that the layoffs were consistent with federal law.
