.A Conversation with Holocaust Survivor Sylvia Ruth Gutmann

music in the park san jose

As the years go by, there become fewer Holocaust survivors — and with their passing disappears stories of what they endured, and how they managed to survive. This Saturday, you have the opportunity to listen to Sylvia Ruth Gutmann, a child survivor of the Holocaust. Gutmann was one of 200 children who were deported to Auschwitz from Camp Rivesaltes in 1942. Her mother was taken to a death camp, and her father was captured and held captive in the infamous Prison Fresnes until he was deported and killed. Gutmann and her sisters were hidden in Switzerland, and then finally brought to the United States. By re-telling the horrors of what she went through as a child, Gutmann hopes to remind us of our responsibility, and how crucial it is to fight and resist those who want to back-pedal in time and diminish progress made since that horrific era.
