Best College Athlete: Enviable improvement on the lawn

Conor Niland, UC Berkeley men's tennis team

Tennis players, members of Cal’s team will be the first to tell you, don’t get no respect. But these days, campus cuties must be swooning all over Conor Niland, who was merely a respectable swat man, posting a mixed win-loss record up until his senior year. Niland took last semester off and played an amateur tour through Europe in the fall. Something happened to his game across the Atlantic, because since his return, he’s posted an 18-0 record, seeded third in the national college rankings, and beaten Benjamin Kohlloeffel, the number one college player in the county, twice in the last few months. “It’s been a rewarding season so far, that’s for sure,” Niland says. Don’t be too shy to say hello if you see him at Blake’s.
