Add Belmont to the List of Places Where You Can’t Smoke

In September, Dublin became the second city in California (and the nation) to declare secondhand smoke a nuisance. Now, as MediaNews reports, Belmont, on the peninsula, is upping the ante.

While Dublin’s ordinance gives secondhand-smoke sufferers a leg up if they want to go through the rigamarole of small-claims court, Belmont’s rules will allow the aggrieved to file complaints with the cops. Just to be clear, we’re not taking sides on this. MediaNews’ Christine Morente, on the other hand, seems to have some strong feelings on the issue, judging by how she began her story by trumpeting this “historic push to protect people from secondhand cigarette smoke.”
