J-School Gets $2.8 Million

Figuring out how newspapers will survive in the multimedia digital era has been a topic of much-heated debate, especially at journalism schools. At UC Berkeley’s Graduate School of Journalism (of which this reporter is an alum), two profs even took their opposing views to the Chron – one, declaring the end of news; the other, countering it’s simply being revived. Whatever the case, the school just got a boost in its role as a multimedia training center with a $2.8 million grant over the next five years from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. The foundation’s Knight Digital Media Center, a partnership between Berkeley’s and USC’s J-schools, will train hundreds of journalists in multimedia storytelling; produce annual conferences, seminars, and workshops; and create a web portal to train more than 20,000 distance learners.
