This week: “Who’s Killing the Immigrant Mothers of Fremont?” Last October, Afghan immigrant Alia Ansari was gunned down in broad daylight on a Fremont street on her way to pick up her children at elementary school. Set alongside the still-unsolved murders of Esperanza Hernandez and her teenage daughter Carmelita two and a half years earlier, there seems to be something going on under the surface of the East Bay’s second-largest city – where waves of immigration in the ’90s created one of the Bay Area’s most culturally diverse communities, home of “Little Kabul” and other ethnic enclaves. Is hate the motive? Reporter Robert Gammon pulls aside the veil.
