Former state Assemblywoman Wilma Chan has to be considered a frontrunner in the race to take the seat of Alameda County Supervisor Alice Lai-Bitker, who has decided not to seek reelection. Chan used to hold the seat before going to the Assembly and handing it off to Lai-Bitker, her then chief of staff. Other rivals to Chan could include Alameda Mayor Beverly Johnson, who is termed out at the end of this year, and former San Leandro Mayor Shelia Young. Lai-Bitker’s district includes Alameda and San Leandro, along with Oakland’s Fruitvale, San Antonio, and Chinatown districts.
