UC Berkeley to Move Biofuels Lab to Downtown

The University of California has quietly decided to build its planned biofuels lab in downtown Berkeley instead of Strawberry Canyon, according to the Berkeley Daily Planet. The Strawberry Canyon site drew strong opposition and prompted a lawsuit from a group of activists because it would have severely damaged a natural habitat. Now, the university plans to build the lab on a two-block site that is bordered by Berkeley Way, Hearst Avenue, Oxford Street, and Shattuck Avenue. The lab is funded by oil giant BP Energy and is pioneering research on the next generation of biofuels, which are designed to lessen our use of foreign oil and slash greenhouse gas emissions.
