.Thee More Shallows

Monkey vs. Shark

The SF-based duo/collective Thee More Shallows (no credits to be found here, nor a UPC code) follow their beguiling second album More Deep Cuts with a maxi-EP/mini-album of subdued sonic strangeness. Most of these seven tracks are so muted and low-key they make their soulmates Lambchop seem like Black Flag by comparison. The album’s selling points: an eccentric, frenzied version of the Temptations’ hit “I Can’t Get Next to You”; and ambient soundscape “Phineas Bogg.” The sticking points: New Order castoffs like “Freshman Remix” and some interchangeable slow songs not listed. Monkey speaks to fans of Thee More Shallows and extremely quiet indie songcraft; otherwise, try to hear Cuts.
