The Karminsky Experience Inc. is part of the Thievery Corporation’s Eighteenth Street Lounge enclave — James Munns and Martin Dingle are best known for their inventive use of soundtrack music alongside club-friendly tracks in their DJ sets. The Power of Suggestion, the debut full-length from this British duo, comes more than ten years after their inception, integrating cinematic elements into an orchestral structure bolstered with dancefloor beats. At times eerie, but other times epic and even narrative, Suggestion uses film samples in the title track and tribal war drums on “The Hip Sheik.” But more than anything else, the Middle Eastern instrumentation stands out on a number of tracks, including “Belly Disco,” “The Wayward Camel,” and “Exploration,” showcasing the Experience’s musicianship while spotlighting their imaginative approach to music-making tools.
