A double winner! One warning, though: Stephanie Perry’s candied yams may be habit-forming. They are that sweet, that sugary, that mind-bendingly good. True, Perry turns out mean ribs, as well as chicken with a delectable barbecue sauce, and a great potato salad, but in the end, the yams might distract you from all else. It’s almost impossible to stop eating them once you get started. They are coated in a caramel-colored sugary, thick syrup, which forms, at times, a crispy crust. There’s a hint of spice to them and you can see a bit of cinnamon on their surface, but the spice doesn’t overpower the flavor of the yams themselves. No matter where you live in the East Bay, Perry’s candied yams are worth the trip.
