The Austrian Autobahn himself showed up at Oakland’s City Hall yesterday, as part of a statewide barn burning tour to drum up support for his plan to cut state spending in order to resolve the state’s $17 billion budget shortfall. But as the Oakland Tribune reported, all anyone else wanted to talk about was raising taxes. Audience members hit him with demands to reinstate the vehicle license fee, tax oil extraction, and reform Prop. 13 so commercial properties could be taxed at higher rates. The governor said no, but after being cornered by Mayor Ron Delllums, agreed to extend the loan of California Highway Patrol personnel to Oakland. Looks like the old teutonic charm doesn’t work in this part of the state.
