Protecting the Bay’s Pleistocene-Era Survivor

The Center for Biological Diversity, headquartered in Tucson (motto: “Because life is good”), announced yesterday it’s going to sue the National Marine Fisheries Service to try and force the feds to protect green sturgeon in the Bay Delta. According to the press release, the fisheries service was required to pick out critical habitat for the sturgeon, but determined instead to determine nothing for another year, leaving the threatened fishies vulnerable.

If you’re feeling cranky about sturgeon protection this morning, just remember: This is a fish that’s survived since the Pleistocene and can be described as “shark-like“, and a “forgotten wonder of the North Coast,” with a mouth that’s “toothless, protruding, and sucker-like.”

Ugly, yes, but who doesn’t like dinosaurs?
