New films challenge hearts and rehash classics in theaters

0

This week theaters bring a wide variety of new releases for just about every discerning cinema goer to choose from. A new romantic drama, Materialists, focuses on a complicated love triangle between Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans and Pedro Pascal. Then there’s another live-action remake of a beloved animated film—but this time someone other than Disney is joining the bandwagon—with Dreamworks’ How to Train Your Dragon. Finally, there’s a new Stephen King adaptation from Mike (Doctor Sleep) Flanagan, The Life of Chuck. But instead of monsters, it’s more interested in the heartbreaking minutia of an unexamined life.

I struggled with How to Train Your Dragon for several reasons, but two of them stick out the most. First, like most of the rest of the live-action remakes, there’s no reason for this movie to exist. For the majority of its running time, How to Train Your Dragon is a near shot-for-shot remake of the animated film, which is still a damn classic. The animation is gorgeous, the pacing and direction near flawless and the voice-acting timeless. All this new version does is remind me that the old one exists—and I would rather be watching it.

The next big issue is the casting. Yes, it’s wonderful seeing Gerard Butler inhabit the role he voiced in the cartoon and Nick Frost is perfect as Gobber, but the film is fundamentally broken with the casting of Mason Thames as Hiccup. Jay Baruchel’s awkward rasp as Hiccup in the original animated trilogy was flawless and built that character beautifully across the three films. No one else stood a chance playing him, but Thames in particular felt so contemporary as an actor and as a young man that every time he appeared onscreen, the spell of the film was broken and I was no longer in a world of Vikings and dragons. He looked like an actor waiting to check his phone.

Toothless the Dragon is still beautifully realized and the flying sequences were stunning to witness, but a live-action remake of an animated classic that’s only 15 years old feels just a little too cynical to me. These remakes need a reason to exist other than the studios shamelessly reaching into the financial cookie jar. Still, this version of How to Train Your Dragon is probably going to make all the money in the world, so maybe audiences are as much to blame as the Hollywood suits.

Materialists is being advertised as a romantic comedy starring the always weirdly reserved Dakota Johnson, the always charming Chris Evans and the always thirst-trapping Pedro Pascal. Audiences might end up a bit disappointed, however, because while there’s plenty of rom, there’s barely any com. This is the latest film from Celine Song, whose previous movie Past Lives is one of the most subtly powerful looks at “the road not taken,” while The Materialists is another sneakily profound look at modern love and what it takes from us.

Johnson plays a wildly successful matchmaker who meets a sweet, rich “unicorn” in Pedro Pascal while still having unresolved feelings for her broke and struggling ex-boyfriend Chris Evans. That setup sounds like a film Jennifer Lopez or Kate Hudson would have starred in a decade ago, but under Song’s quietly devastating direction and achingly lonely screenplay, we have what amounts to a complete deconstruction of the romantic comedy and a bitingly pointed look at how hard it is to feel valued in a time where materialism can shape one’s own self-worth.

While Materialists doesn’t quite have the same rich textures of emotion as Past Lives, I still found myself deeply introspective once the film ended, and it re-contextualized how I viewed myself in many ways. As someone who’s been single for quite some time, I struggle with understanding why I continually fail to find lasting love.

The film realizes this about its audience and does such a lovely job at making viewers look at their cynical longings that it’s easy to miss the warm center that Song is trying to share: That each of us is individually valued in different ways and that the hope of someone discovering that value is what keeps us going. I’m not sure whether that’s cynical hope or brutal optimism, but Materialists has more to say about humanity than I was ready for.

Finally, The Life of Chuck takes a nonlinear look at a life from childhood to deathbed and how the Walt Whitman poem “Song of Myself” and its immortal line about humanity containing multitudes is more than a cliche or a platitude, but something we’re all worthy of realizing about ourselves before we die.

Cynical folk will watch The Life of Chuck and find it overly sentimental, while gentle optimists might find the darkness at its center—as could only be conjured by Stephen King—a bit too much to be palatable. While ultimately a statement about what it means to be alive, to love and be loved in return, the magic of this movie will hit everyone slightly differently. Whether one finds it life-affirming and profound or solipsistic and obvious … says more about who the person watching it was on the day they watched it than it does about the film itself.

The Life of Chuck worked for me. I found it spellbinding—the loveliest movie about what it means to be a human being since Wim Wenders’ Perfect Days. Yes, there is corn and cheese and ham and all the nouns and adjectives used to describe something that wears its weeping heart on its sleeve, but there’s also truth and it wouldn’t surprise me if The Life of Chuck ends up making a damn fine double feature with It’s a Wonderful Life a hundred years from now.

Oken makes magic in Oakland

Two black-and-white images of cats hang side by side on a low cabinet at the back of Oken’s kitchen. Each is labeled with a name—Melon and Pickle. Their regal heads are framed, bearing the same quizzical expressions as B. Kliban’s comic strip cats. Oken spelled backwards in Japanese (neko) means cat. After a recent Saturday night dinner there, I began to envy Melon and Pickle. Those beloved felines must get to chow down on all of the uneaten leftovers once the restaurant’s closed for the day.

Albert Ok, the chef behind Ok’s Deli, has created a magical menu for Oken. One that draws from and honors several different cultures at the same time. For a restaurant to execute such a clear point of view from its inception is a remarkable sleight of hand. Additionally, and not incidentally, the second we arrived the staff were engaged and welcoming. They seemed excited to be working there which, in the hospitality industry, is understandably not always the case. Our server was attentive and knowledgeable about every dish and genuinely interested in our reactions to them. Finding exceptional dishes to eat in the Bay Area isn’t unusual, but pairing them with a group of happy employees is a laudable achievement.

This first iteration of the menu is divided into three categories: cold appetizers, hot appetizers, and soups and entrées. The wine, sake, soju and beer options are listed with the names of their producer, style and price. Baechu, or Napa cabbage, salad ($17) is the first cold item listed. Before we ordered it, I watched it pass by and land at the table next to ours. A cabbage salad sounded unremarkable until I took a good look at it. It was piled high with crispy curls and whorls of burdock root, onions, garlic and potatoes. A few shungiku—edible chrysanthemum—leaves added a pretty, decorative touch to all the layers of crunchy vegetables.

A tomato salad ($17) with an attractive crown of crispy wonton slivers followed. The tomatoes were quartered and arranged in a circle on top of a roasted tomato and tofu spread. Chives, sesame seeds and a sesame ginger dressing finished the dish. Where the baechu salad made cabbage into something daring, the tomato salad landed in more familiar and comforting territory. We should have ordered a hot appetizer, the crispy potato or sichuan popcorn chicken, to contrast with the first plate of greens.

For entrées we tried both the broiled ocean trout ($32) and kalbi ssam, or marinated short rib ($46). The trout, glazed with gochujang, or red chili paste, was a perfect dish to split between two people. It was seared hard, skin-side down, until the fish easily flaked apart with the tines of a fork. Grilled zucchini, fresh cucumber and sprigs of green onion all melded together with the trout under the influence of a tangy citrus soy vinaigrette.

The short rib was boneless and came with a bountiful array of leafy sides to assemble as a lettuce wrap. Four small bowls were filled with kimchi, pickled daikon, a house-made ssamjang dipping sauce and confit garlic. A mini hambaga steak was even served on top of the length of ribs. This entrée should become an Oken signature dish, never to be removed from the menu.

To end the meal we also greedily ordered tsukune dumpling noodle soup ($25). Made with a chicken dashi broth, it was brightly laced with hints of citrus and a massive amount of green onions. The soup was also filled with tsukune dumplings, a soft-boiled egg and housemade egg noodles. The poached chicken was tender and elegantly sliced. This was recognizable as a bowl of ramen but totally reinvented.

Chef Ok has found a way to mix together flavors that he loves without destroying the meaning of the original dish. It’s as if his kitchen runs in a parallel universe in which traditional dishes take on startling new meanings. They won’t replace the old, comforting recipes but they do suggest Oken is making a compelling host of alternative options.

Free Will Astrology: Week of June 25

ARIES March 21-April 19

The Hawaiian word refers to a primal darkness from which all life flows. It’s not a fearsome void, but a fertile mystery, rich with future possibilities and the ancestors’ hopes. In the coming weeks, I invite you to treat your inner life as . Be as calm and patient and watchful as an Aries can be as you monitor the inklings that rise up out of the deep shadows. Have faith that the cloudy uncertainty will ultimately evolve into clarity, revealing the precise directions you need.

TAURUS April 20-May 20

In the 17th century, the Taurus polymath Athanasius Kircher constructed a fantastical machine called the Aeolian harp. It wasn’t designed to be played by human fingers, but by the wind. It conjured music with currents invisible to the eye. I nominate this sublime contraption as your power object for the coming weeks, Taurus. The most beautiful and healing melodies may come from positioning yourself so that inspiration can blow through. How might you attune yourself to the arrival of unexpected help and gifts? Set aside any tendency you might have to try too hard. Instead, allow life to sing through you.

GEMINI May 21-June 20

The painter Vincent van Gogh wrote, “Great things are done by a series of small things brought together.” That’s good advice for you right now. Your ambitions may feel daunting if you imagine them as monumental and monolithic. But if you simply focus on what needs to be done next—the daily efforts, the incremental improvements—you will be as relaxed as you need to be to accomplish wonders. Remember that masterpieces are rarely completed in a jiffy. The cumulative power of steady work is potentially your superpower. Here’s another crucial tip: Use your imagination to have fun as you attend to the details.

CANCER June 21-July 22

Welcome to a special edition of “What’s My Strongest Yearning?” I’m your host, Rob Brezsny, and I’m delighted you have decided to identify the single desire that motivates you more than any other. Yes, you have many wishes and hopes and dreams, but one is more crucial than all the rest! Right? To begin the exercise, take three deep breaths and allow every knot of tension to dissolve and exit your beautiful body. Then drop down into the primal depths of your miraculous soul and wander around until you detect the shimmering presence of the beloved reason you came here to this planet. Immerse yourself in this glory for as long as you need to. Exult in its mysterious power to give meaning to everything you do. Ask it to nurture you, console you and inspire you.

LEO July 23-Aug. 22

In certain medieval maps, unexplored territories were marked with the Latin phrase hic sunt dracones—“here be dragons.” It was a warning and a dare, a declaration that no one knew what lay beyond. In the coming weeks, Leo, you may find yourself traveling into one of those unlabeled regions. Rather than flinching or dodging, I invite you to press forward with respectful curiosity. Some of the so-called dragons will be figments. Others are protectors of treasure and might be receptive to sharing with a bright light like you. Either way, productive adventures are awaiting you in that unmapped territory. Go carefully—but go.

VIRGO Aug. 23-Sept. 22

In traditional Japanese carpentry, joints are made so skillfully that they need no nails, screws or adhesives. Carpenters use intricate joinery techniques to connect pieces of wood so tightly that the structures are strong and durable. They often require a mallet for assembly and disassembly. In metaphorical terms, you are capable of that kind of craftsmanship these days, Virgo. I hope you will take advantage of this by building lasting beauty and truth that will serve you well into the future. Don’t rush the joinery. If it’s not working, don’t force it. Re-cut, re-measure, breathe deeply and try again.

LIBRA Sept. 23-Oct. 22

Here’s one of my unruly rules about human competence: In every professional field, from physicians to lawyers to psychics to teachers, about 15% of all the practitioners are downright mediocre, even deficient. Seventy-five percent are at least satisfactory and sometimes good. And 10% of the total are surpassingly excellent, providing an extraordinary service. With this in mind, I’m happy to say that you now have a knack for gravitating toward that exceptional 10% in every domain you are drawn to. I predict that your intuition will consistently guide you toward premium sources.

SCORPIO Oct. 23-Nov. 21

The Japanese concept of shinrin-yoku means “forest bathing.” It invites people to immerse themselves in the natural world, drawing on its restorative power. In accordance with astrological portents, I urge you Scorpios to maximize your forest bathing. To amplify the enrichment further, gravitate toward other environments that nourish your soul’s need for solace and uplift. The naked fact is that you need places and influences that offer you comfort, safety and tender inspiration. Don’t apologize for making your life a bit less heroic as you tend to your inner world with gentle reverence.

SAGITTARIUS Nov. 22-Dec. 21

The camera obscura was a precursor to modern cameras. It projected the outside world upside down onto interior walls. Artists loved it because it helped them see reality from new angles. I hereby proclaim that you, Sagittarius, will be like both the artist and the camera obscura lens in the coming weeks. Your perceptions may feel inverted, strange, even disorienting, but that’s a gift! So let unfamiliarity be your muse. Flip your assumptions. Sketch from shadow instead of light. Have faith that the truth isn’t vanishing or hiding; it’s simply appearing in unfamiliar guises. Don’t rush to turn right-side-up things. Relish and learn from the tilt.

CAPRICORN Dec. 22-Jan. 19

I’m sure you enjoy gazing into some mirrors more than others. It’s amazing how different you might look in your bathroom mirror and the mirror in the restroom at work. Some store windows may reflect an elegant, attractive version of you, while others distort your image. A similar principle is at work in the people with whom you associate. Some seem to accentuate your finest attributes, while others bring out less flattering aspects. I bring this to your attention, dear Capricorn, because I believe it will be extra important in the coming weeks for you to surround yourself with your favorite mirrors.

AQUARIUS Jan. 20-Feb. 18

Leonardo da Vinci filled thousands of pages with sketches, notes and experiments. He never finished many of them. He called this compilation his “codex of wonder.” It wasn’t a record of failures. It was an appreciation of his complex process and a way to honor his creative wellspring. Taking a cue from da Vinci’s love of marvelous enigmas, I invite you to be in love with the unfinished in the coming weeks. Make inquisitiveness your default position. Reconsider abandoned ideas. Be a steward of fertile fragments. Some of your best work may arise from revisiting composted dreams or incomplete sketches. Here’s your motto: Magic brews in the margins.

PISCES Feb. 19-March 20

In the remote Atacama Desert of Chile, certain flowers lie dormant for years, awaiting just the right conditions to burst into blossom in a sudden, riotous explosion of color and vitality. Scientists call it a superbloom. Metaphorically speaking, Pisces, you are on the verge of such a threshold. I’m sure you can already feel the inner ripening as it gathers momentum. Any day now, your full flowering will erupt—softly but dramatically. You won’t need to push. You will simply open. To prepare yourself emotionally, start rehearsing lively shouts of “HALLELUJAH! HOORAY! WHOOPEE!”

What’s the hype?

One step into West Oakland’s Hyphy Burger and it’s clear the name isn’t just for show. Young diners crowd around tables, laughing loudly as they wait for their order numbers to be called. Old-school and new-school Bay Area hip-hop blares from the speakers. This space doesn’t just serve burgers—it embodies the hyphy spirit.

Curious about the story behind the burger joint, I hopped on a call with one of the owners to learn how Hyphy Burger came to be.

Co-founded by two West Oakland natives, foodie influencer Darion Frazier and Grammy-nominated rapper “Guap” (aka Guapdad 4000), Hyphy Burger is more than just another smashburger joint. It’s a grassroots culinary homage to the Bay Area’s iconic hyphy movement, blending local flavors, nostalgia and cultural pride.

According to Wikipedia, the hyphy movement emerged in the early 2000s as a hyperlocal cultural force in the Bay Area, especially Oakland. Coined by rapper Keak da Sneak, “hyphy” means getting hyped or going dumb—a rebellious, high-energy expression through music, dance, fashion and cars. Popularized by artists like Mac Dre, Mistah F.A.B. and E-40, the movement became a celebration of Bay Area identity, grit and creativity.

Before the restaurant opened its doors, Frazier worked in the pharmacy department at Kaiser Permanente while building his food influencer brand, @bayareafoodz. After more than eight years of growing a loyal following, Frazier was approached by local entrepreneur Zack Alwajeeh, who floated the idea of launching a restaurant together. Three years of development followed. From researching Bay Area hip-hop culture to having Frazier’s brother design the logo, uniforms and packaging, the Hyphy Burger vision slowly came to fruition.

“We kinda wanted to put something out for the Bay Area and its culture,” Frazier said. “And everyone loves burgers so we thought, ‘Why not Hyphy Burger?’”

At Hyphy Burger, the menu is short and sweet by design. Much like iconic chains such as In-N-Out, the offerings are streamlined to highlight what the team does best: burgers, shakes and fries, with a few creative twists. The signature “Ya Feel Me” sauce adds a tangy, savory kick to the burgers, while the cereal shakes strike a nostalgic chord. For Frazier, the Fruity Pebble Shake is a personal favorite.

“We grew up on cereal. It’s dessert for the kids but it hits for adults, too. It takes you back,” he said.

As someone who grew up loving Cinnamon Toast Crunch, I had to try the shake inspired by it. One sip, and I was hit with the familiar taste of cinnamon-sweet milk, just like the kind I’d slurp up after finishing my cereal. It instantly took me back to school-day mornings at the kitchen table, cartoon reruns playing in the background. It felt like a portal back to childhood.

That sense of nostalgia is central to the Hyphy Burger experience. The menu isn’t just about feeding people; it’s about storytelling, weaving together childhood memories, Bay Area culture and community pride.

One of Hyphy Burger’s most “throwback” features is a bright yellow school bus parked outside the restaurant, a nod to the “yellow bus” imagery central to the hyphy movement of the early aughts. Frazier shared that during that era, Bay Area artists like Mistah F.A.B. popularized the bus as a symbol of youthful energy. The team hopes to eventually transform the bus into a hybrid dining-and-photo space where customers can soak in the nostalgia while enjoying their food.

Although Hyphy Burger opened its doors in mid-February, the restaurant is still operating in its soft-launch phase. Frazier says a grand opening could be on the horizon in the next month or two, but for now the team is still “gearing up.” Nevertheless, big-picture plans are in motion.

Frazier envisions future collaborations with Bay Area hip-hop legends and a potential expansion into a new location—but at the moment, the focus remains small and hyperlocal. The goal is simple: To serve up juicy smashburgers and creamy shakes, and represent West Oakland with pride.

“We wanted our rollout to be quiet as we gathered feedback from the neighborhood,” Frazier said. “It was really important for us to have that intimate relationship.”

Care 4 Community mobilizes Oakland’s grassroots

As the Trump administration continues to test the restraints on the executive branch of American government, citizens on the state and local levels are beginning to feel a squeeze as much-needed funds and services are being placed in jeopardy. Now more than ever, people need to be informed on the organizations coming together to provide relief, education and training to offset the chaos descending from above. Oakland’s Care 4 Community (C4C) is a good place to start.

Headed by Nicole Dean and Viviana Nance, C4C provides support for various local causes and underserved communities. When Trump cut funding in Oakland for violence prevention programs in July 2025, C4C advocated for resourcing neighborhoods versus divesting from community to invest in policing, supported the successes of Oakland’s Department of Violence Prevention and responded to 911 calls regarding nonviolent crimes with community-based services including mental health crisis intervention.

When Oakland restarted the city’s homeless encampment sweeps at the start of May 2025, C4C worked to improve conditions at encampments, converting abandoned and dilapidated homes to affordable housing; passing tenant-protection measures and measures to allow tenants to purchase the homes in which they live; and funding the creation of temporary, transitional safe spaces for people without housing.

Far from being a reactionary organization, C4C is proactively in the streets of Oakland on a daily basis, not only providing services and advocacy but knocking on doors to advocate for policies and politicians it feels have Oakland’s safety and success in mind.

“Care 4 Community really came out of a lot of years of grassroots organizing in Oakland, including the Moms for Housing occupation on Magnolia Street in 2019,” Dean said. “A lot of us were part of the committee that really helped back up that occupation and held it down for 59 days. We were canvassing the neighborhood before, during and after the occupation itself, and then when Carroll Fife ran for office, we were door-knocking for her every week.

“After we won that election,” Dean added, “Community Ready Corps (CRC) basically sat us down and said, ‘Please don’t stop door-knocking. Now that we’re going into the belly of the beast, we need to keep building the movement.’ We’ve been door-knocking every week since 2020. When it’s not election season, we’re asking people what they care about and how we can help.”

C4C was instrumental in getting Barbara Lee elected as Oakland’s mayor. Its canvassing and door-knocking efforts galvanized working-class East and West Oakland, otherwise known as “The Flats,” and countered misinformation being spread about both Lee and mayoral candidate Loren Taylor in the Oakland Hills.

“Taylor had been campaigning early and continuously since 2022,” Nance said. “In 2022, he won the hills. That was his base in 2022, and remember that he lost by a really thin margin that year. He almost had it. When I talked to voters in the hills, people would self-identify as progressive Democrats and thought ‘these are two progressive Democrats and I’m going to vote for the young guy that’s going to bring the new energy and that’s going to get stuff done.’

“And I would ask them, ‘Why do you think that Loren Taylor will get things done? I can tell you that Taylor didn’t get anything done when he was a council member,’ Nance continued. “The only piece of legislation that he got passed was the encampment management policy, which was a failed, unenforceable policy.

“A lot of people in the flats already knew about Taylor and remembered him from his term in council. People in the flats wanted to know who was funding him and were happy that Barbara Lee was running.”

As C4C’s website states, “Progressive electoral candidates often say ‘the fight’s not over on election day,’ but the powerful movements that propel progressive candidates into office tend to go dormant between election cycles. C4C is bucking that trend by building a civic engagement machine that operates 52 weeks a year, every year, to advance a transformative political agenda in Oakland”—in doing so, it is creating a replicable model for increased participation in local governance.

C4C is currently taking applications for its Summer Organizing Fellowships beginning in June. The organization needs people 15 years old or older to knock on doors, talk with neighbors about local issues, gather community concerns, and help plan rallies and community events. These are paid, part-time positions and an excellent opportunity for anyone who wants to get involved in countering the assault on the rights and will of the people in Oakland and all over the country.

“We don’t just door-knock,” Nance said. “We organize neighborhood meetings where we teach people how the local government works. We also do service days where we clean up parks and get in contact with elders that need somebody to help them clean out their garage. It’s nice vibes over at Care 4 Community. It’s very warm, fuzzy stuff. We would love to have you all join us.”

New bill proposes people-powered politics

Zahra Ahmed is an activist, a scholar and a mother in Alameda who sometimes imagines herself running for public office. But there’s one thing that always gets in her way.

“I do NOT want to ask anyone for money,” Ahmed says. “And there are a lot of people I know who feel the same way.”

However if the California Fair Elections Act of 2026—a.k.a. SB42—passes, there could be a pathway for more individuals who aren’t wealthy or beholden to corporate donors to put their hats in the ring. If passed, the bill would allow candidates to accept public funds to campaign for office on the condition that they abide by expenditure limits and meet qualifying criteria. District 24 Assemblymember Alex Lee, who helped author the bill, is one of two state legislators who didn’t accept corporate money for his campaign.

“The majority of Americans on both sides of the aisle believe that lobbyists and major donors wield too much influence,” Lee says. “A lot of people would say that Elon Musk wielding so much influence as an unelected billionaire in the White House is a problem. To combat this, we want to empower everyday people to really shape our democracy.”

This can be done through democracy dollars, vouchers or match programs, which Lee says is a way to enable people to be both donors and constituents. Lee points to Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, who ran and won the mayoral race using a public funding mechanism, as proof that such a system can work. Passing the California Fair Elections Act of 2026 would mean repealing the Political Reform Act of 1974, which prohibits public officers from spending or candidates from accepting money while seeking elections.

Ahmed believes it’s timely to shine a light on SB42 as Americans prepare to celebrate Juneteenth, the day in 1865 when enslaved people in Texas received word of their freedom. Having people-powered elections, in which people have the capacity to more deeply engage or even run for office, is another form of freedom—particularly for BIPOC communities which have historically been underrepresented in the political realm.

“We sometimes get jaded and aren’t interested in electoral politics because it hasn’t delivered for us,” Ahmed says. “This won’t solve our problems or fix all the social issues, but it does mean that in the political realm a small door will be open.”

Ahmed would like SB42 even more if it required all candidates to use public funding and included restrictions around corporate funding, but says we have to start somewhere. “I would be so happy for my money to be put into this pot to level the playing field instead of having it go towards bombing people and starving them,” she says.

While the playing field is being leveled so that more people can play the game, Ahmed says she hopes this could also be the beginning of people rethinking our two-party structure, so that third-party candidates may also find their way into the race.

“For so long we’ve talked about voting for the lesser of the two evils. We need to change our approach,” Ahmed says. “The two parties really seem to be two sides of one party.”

As the Trump administration cracks down on immigration and begins a massive deportation campaign concerning perceived undocumented immigrants while also banning Diversity, Equity and Inclusion efforts, Ahmed says it’s more important than ever to do what we can to fight back.

“We should not look to the government to validate our history and our celebrations,” she says.

But she also doesn’t think folks should wait for permission.

“As an activist and knowing the nature of this government, I feel like our power lies in coming together as a community regardless,” Ahmed says. “‘Power can be nothing without demand,’ as Fredrick Douglas said.”

Assemblymember Lee might argue that SB42, the Fair Elections Act, has the potential to create the demand via a ballot measure in 2026 to work toward people-powered elections.

“It’s not predisposed to one party or another. It’s just about making sure that there’s more democracy for everyone,” Lee says. “If more democracy means that suddenly everyone is Republican, Democrat or Third Party, then it is what it is. But it needs to be more reflective of the community and less about money.”

Both Assemblymember Lee and Ahmed are optimistic that SB42 will make its way to the November 2026 ballot so that voters can have a bigger say.

As such, one of the biggest indicators that can be used to identify the best online casinos and gambling sites is the variety and quality of available games. This section will highlight some of the most popular online casino games.

Slots

Slot titles are by far known by many to be a popular game selection on online casinos. This is because they offer players a simple gameplay that tags along with the potential of hefty winnings. Some of the most popular variations of slots range from classic three-reel machines to modern video slots packed with features like free spins, bonus rounds and progressive jackpots. As a player who prefers low volatility games, I believe slots are the best category to explore.

Roulette

Roulette is a timeless casino classic that offers both simplicity and excitement. In this game, players bet on where a ball will land on a spinning wheel. From European and American variants to immersive 3D and live roulette tables, players can choose the version that best suits their style of play.

Poker

Poker is a strategic card game where players compete against each other to form the best hand. This game selection has remained a favorite among players who enjoy skill-based gameplay. With the selection, players are bound to explore different variations of it.

Live Dealer Casino Games

Live dealer games bring the authentic casino experience online by streaming real dealers in real time. Players then interact via video while the dealer manages the gameplay. With real-time streaming and professional dealers managing the tables, players have games such as blackjack, baccarat, roulette and even game shows at their disposal, which can all be played live.

With the SSL encryption, our recommended platforms ensure that all personal details, login credentials and financial transactions are fully encrypted and shielded from third parties.

Certified Fairness and Game Audits

The online casinos and gambling sites above have partnered with independent testing agencies to ensure that all games are fair. They also ensure that the listed games operate using random number generators (RNGs).

Responsible Gambling Tools

Our recommended platforms promote responsible gameplay with tools that help keep players in check. Moreover, they are affiliated with responsible gambling organizations, which provide the necessary assistance to players who need help.

Transparent Terms and Conditions

Our recommended online casinos and gambling sites have been thoroughly checked for transparency regarding their rules, bonus terms, payout policies and other key aspects. In light of this, we ensured that none contained predatory clauses hidden in complex terms and conditions.

Online Casinos: Who to Trust

While there are many reputable online casinos and gambling sites, it is no wonder to find that there are some shady platforms that operate simply to defraud people. To help you avoid these pitfalls, this section will detail some of the most common warning signs that denote untrustworthy online casinos and gambling sites. They are:

No Valid Gambling License

A platform that does not have a valid gambling license is a clear red flag, and it should be avoided at all costs. This is because, chances are, it is not in compliance with regulations that are in place to govern it. So, it is best to stay away from such a platform.

Poor Customer Support

Reliable online casinos and gambling sites have a reputation for offering multiple communication channels through which their customer support team can be reached. As such, if the customer support of a platform you encounter is slow, unresponsive, or evasive, that is reason enough to stay away from it.

No Welcome Bonus or Ongoing Promotions

While not every bonus has to be massive, the absence of incentives is a telltale sign of an online casino and gambling site not invested in player satisfaction. It could also indicate a barebones operation running behind the scenes.

Vague Terms and Conditions

An online casino and gambling site with unclear terms and conditions reveals a serious concern. This is because this is often used to hide unfair rules, high wagering requirements, withdrawal caps and even predatory clauses that work against players.

No Game Provider Information

Reputable providers always proudly display their software developers. If an online casino or gambling platform does not display any of its providers, then it is highly likely that it uses rigged software.

Negative Player Reviews

It is always advised to look into recent player reviews from trusted forums to see what other players are saying about the platform. If the reviews consist of repeated complaints, then it is better to stay away from it.

Best Gambling Site Bonuses

One of the biggest advantages of playing at any of the best online casinos and gambling sites is that you have many bonuses and promotions at your disposal. Considering that there are different levels of playing the game, these platforms offer bonuses in different forms, each designed to reward different types of players and playing habits. Below are the most common types of bonuses available on the best online casinos and gambling sites:

New Customer Bonus

Also known as the welcome bonus, the new customer bonus, as the name suggests, is a promotion offered to new players when they first sign up to the respective online casinos and gambling sites. As is the case with the majority of platforms, new customer bonuses often come in the form of deposit match bonuses, such that the platform rewards players with a specific percentage of their initial deposit. However, some also include free spins or multiple deposit rewards spread across your first few transactions.

No Deposit Bonus

A no deposit bonus is a type of offering that allows new players to try out the offerings of an online casino or gambling site without having to make a prior financial commitment in the form of a deposit. With this type of bonus, players can get different rewards, which may come in the form of bonus cash and even free spins. A no deposit offer grants players a risk-free way to test a platform before committing real money.

Free Spins Bonus

Free spins are often offered alongside welcome bonuses or as standalone promotions for specific slot games. What free spins bonuses do is, they give players a set number of spins to use on selected titles, after which the wins are subjected to some form of wagering requirements.

VIP Player Bonus

With VIP and loyalty programs in many online casinos and gambling sites, the platforms often reward their high-stakes players with exclusive perks. Some VIP player bonuses are up for grabs, including cashback offers, exclusive deposit deals, faster withdrawals, personal account managers, tournament invitations, and even luxury gifts. With this bonus, the more a person plays, the more perks they unlock.

Best Payment Options at Online Casinos

Smooth and secure financial transactions function as cornerstones of any online casino or gambling site, as they greatly impact players’ gambling experience. For that reason, online casinos and gambling sites make deposit and withdrawal transactions as convenient as possible for all users.

This section will examine some commonly supported payment options available on the best online casinos and gambling sites. They include:

Cryptocurrencies

Digital currencies such as Bitcoin, Ethereum and Litecoin are becoming increasingly common at online casinos and gambling sites. This growth is owed to their ability to bypass currency exchanges while still providing users with fast transactions, enhanced anonymity and lower transaction costs. Due to this, many players have been seen opting to use the supported cryptocurrencies to make their deposits and cash out their winnings.

Credit and Debit Cards

Credit and debit cards have long been a go-to payment alternative for many players. Their use extends to most day-to-day activities, making them familiar with their use, making them a preferable option. While they are mostly used to make deposits, some online casinos and gambling sites allow withdrawals. Some of the perks enjoyed by using them include instant deposits and secure transactions. However, before using them for any gambling activities, it is important to check that your bank allows gambling transactions.

Digital Wallets (e-Wallets)

e-Wallet services like Skrill, Neteller and PayPal are popular with offshore casino players. These platforms act as intermediaries, and by doing so, they allow for fast deposits and withdrawals while keeping sensitive banking information private. eWallets are especially appealing for those who value both speed and security when managing their gambling funds.

Bank Wire Transfers

Bank wire transfers are a common mode of payment, especially for players who are cashing out large amounts of winnings. This is because of the safety of the transactions and the usually high transaction limits. Despite that, bank wire transfers come with downsides, such as longer processing times, which may delay access to the funds, and additional charges.

Responsible Gambling with the Best Gambling Sites

Despite being fun to take part in, online gambling can easily spiral into uncontrolled gambling, which has dire side effects. For this reason, it is prudent to have online casinos and gambling sites that provide more than just entertainment and extend to responsible gambling tools. With these provisions, players can remain in control of their gambling habits.

Examples of tools that are often available to players to keep their gambling in check are:

Deposit Limits

With this tool, players can set daily, weekly or monthly limits on how much they can deposit into their accounts, helping them to prevent overspending while encouraging budgeting.

Loss Limits

Loss limits are tools that restrict the amount a player can lose over a set period. Once the limit is reached, the player cannot wager more until the designated time frame resets.

Wagering Limits

Wagering limits are a responsible gambling tool that caps the total amount a player can bet within a specific time period.

Session Time Reminders

Session time reminders are regular notifications during gameplay to remind users how long they have been playing. By doing so, they encourage players to take breaks and avoid playing for extended periods without realizing it.

Cool-Off Periods

A cool-off feature allows players to temporarily suspend their accounts for a short time, during which they cannot log in or place any bets.

Self-Exclusion Options

Self-exclusion tools allow players who feel they need a more extended break to block access to their accounts for longer periods. Once the tool has been activated, it cannot be reversed until the agreed-upon time has passed.

The best online casinos and gambling sites don’t just offer these tools; they make them easily accessible, often from the account settings. As has been seen, some platforms train their customer support teams to identify and assist players showing signs of problem gambling. By integrating these safeguards, the best online casinos and gambling sites ensure that entertainment never comes at the cost of player well-being.

‘Courage, Hope, Resistance’ sets theme for Albany FilmFest

Known for its emphasis on short films shown over a long weekend, the Albany FilmFest is changing tack this year. The theme of the 15th annual festival is “Courage, Hope, Resistance.” Five documentaries all made by East Bay filmmakers will show, one each month, at Rialto Cinemas in El Cerrito starting on June 19 through Oct. 16. Each film in its own way contends with crumbling American institutions. Ones that we collectively, and naively, believed were strong enough to withstand the predations of a despot and his vampiric minions.

Denise Zmekhol’s Skin of Glass (June 19) starts as a filmed memoir. Zmekhol recalls her childhood in Brazil with a voiceover and an array of childhood photographs. Then she methodically brings her father, Roger, into the story. In the 1960s he was a celebrated architect in São Paulo who designed a skyscraper that’s known as the Pele de Vidro or Skin of Glass.

The archived images of Zmekhol’s sleek building show the promise of mid-20th century Brazilian architecture. One of her father’s original drawings is a rendering of a rounded office staircase. The startling bannisters suggest organic vines or branches that would ephemerally circle the ascending human form. With a thriving architectural movement in place, São Paulo was poised to become a model city of the future—until a military dictatorship took over the country.

In one of many unforeseen outcomes, the regime bankrupted the tenants. All of that city’s promise ended in ruins. The filmmaker’s contemporary shots of Pele de Vidro pan across broken or boarded-up exterior windows. And, like many of the adjacent buildings, it’s now inhabited by “hundreds of homeless families.” The divide between the haves and the have-nots is now a chasm there. The dictatorship ended 40 years ago, but Brazil has yet to recover from it.

There are, of course, obvious parallels to the current state of housing in America and elsewhere. Skin of Glass, like the other films curated for the festival, are actively alerting us to the danger signs of an encroaching nationwide system failure. Democracy Noir (July 17) also tells a before-and-after story. Connie Field’s film is set in Hungary. It charts the rise of Hungary’s conservative prime minister, Viktor Orbán, through the eyes of several disillusioned citizens.

Despite a decade under Orbán’s leadership, the faces of a journalist and a politician from an opposing party still register shock and disbelief at the speed with which he shifted Hungary’s culture and politics to the right. Field also features a mother and daughter, living under the same roof, who are ideologically opposed to one another. While her mother praises Orbán for the changes he’s implemented, the daughter silently blinks her incredulity into the eye of the camera. The scene illustrates the political and philosophical divide within a single family while also indicating two distinctly different interpretations of reality.

Rick Goldsmith’s Stripped for Parts: American Journalism on the Brink (Oct. 16) is a scrappy tale that recounts the dismantling of local newsrooms across the country by—wait for it—awful billionaires. They adopt the tactic of vultures, diving down on failing news organizations, buying them out, firing the staff and somehow making a profit off of the carcasses. The pace and look of the documentary isn’t as lyrical as Skin of Glass, but it’s as distressing to watch as any segment of 60 Minutes.

The more hopeful films in the festival posit models for activism. The 9 Lives of Barbara Dane (Aug. 14), by Maureen Gosling and Jed Riffe, is a biopic about the late singer, songwriter and activist. Black-and-white clips from the 1950s and ’60s capture Dane’s powerful voice booming out jazz songs. Dane moved away from jazz and into folk music, writing and playing songs that didn’t have the same staying power that Joan Baez’s, Woody Guthrie’s and Bob Dylan’s did. But Jane Fonda, Baez herself and Bonnie Raitt all testify to Dane’s talent and to her lasting commitment to a variety of social causes.

No other playwright has captured the human experience quite like William Shakespeare, whose 39 plays have been produced more often than those of any other writer. He is unrivaled in his masterful and playful use of the English language to express love, jealousy, hate, despair, sadness and the entire spectrum of emotions that govern our mortal lives.

“He hits you right in the soul,” says Phillip Leyva, co-founder of the Berkeley Shakespeare Company. “Shakespeare is woven into so many aspects of our lives, we don’t even realize it sometimes.”

Leyva, along with fellow actors Emily Newsome and Jennifer Gallagher, founded the Berkeley Shakespeare Company in 2021, in the heart of Covid-19. Says Newsome, “Everything shut down. We were very uncertain about the future, but we were hungry to do more.”

The three decided to start their own company so they could create more opportunities for actors. They raised $7,000 in an Indiegogo campaign to help pay for initial setup costs and chose Berkeley as their home base. “We wanted to establish a company in a central location in the Bay Area so we could attract actors from all over,” Leyva says.

Their first production was Macbeth, staged in the Finnish Hall in Berkeley in December 2021. Leyva, who played the title role, recalls the power of such an intimate space: “We squeezed about 40 people into this very small room, and we removed the lightbulbs from the chandeliers to make it super dim. The audience was right there with me, and it really allowed me to use the timbre of my voice to its greatest effect.”

As a theater company with no stage, equipment, costumes or props of its own, Berkeley Shakespeare Company relies on partnerships with other venues and companies to put on shows. “The Bay Area theater community is really tight,” Newsome says. “They will always help you get what you need.”

In 2024, the company was awarded with a Going Green Achievement by Theatre Bay Area for its production of Cymbeline. All of the sets, props and costumes for the show were recycled or borrowed. It allowed Newsome, Leyva and Gallagher to focus more on direction and acting.

Berkeley Shakespeare Company is committed to creating powerful and impactful shows, hoping to stretch social boundaries by casting nontraditional actors in lead roles. “We have showcased a variety of performers of different body types, ethnic and racial backgrounds, and sexual and gender identities,” Leyva says.

Actor Lisa Wang, with the group since the beginning, loves the accessibility of the company. With no previous Shakespeare experience, she was cast as Don John in the 2022 production of Much Ado About Nothing. “This is a dark, juicy role that I normally wouldn’t have had access to. It was so much fun!” she says.

“That was our intent from day one, to let actors play whichever role they wanted,” Newsome says. They also wanted to present Shakespeare, which is often challenging for audiences to understand, in a new and accessible way. “Sometimes Shakespeare is perceived as a bit academic or stuffy. We try to deliver the lines with a more modern tone of voice while still preserving the rhythm and integrity of the original text.”

Leyva, who spent some time teaching high school English to a minority population, thinks Shakespeare belongs to everyone. “My students were often skeptical that they could learn anything from this old white dude,” he says. “But Shakespeare was really breaking all the rules back then, creating his own words and using language in his own way. His stories are universal.”

The company is currently gearing up to present Julius Caesar at the Live Oak Theatre in Berkeley. Directed by Christian Vaughn-Munck, it stars Lisa Burton Guevara as Caesar. “Traditionally this is a very heavy and dramatic play,” Vaughn-Munck says. “I’m trying to find the goofiness in it all. Think Mel Brooks, Monty Python and Dr. Strangelove.”

Leyva thinks audiences are going to love it. “It’s set in this post-apocalyptic world where the norms of dress are different and there are these residual power structures in place, like Mad Max,” he says. “We don’t necessarily want this to be a reflection on the current political climate, that would be too easy. Of course, there are some disturbing similarities …”

And in October, Berkeley Shakespeare Company will team up with the Point Montara Lighthouse to present a unique, on-site production of The Tempest. “It’s going to be this immersive experience where we start outside and then move indoors. It’s a very beautiful and stunning location,” Leyva says.

“We’re very familiar with working with nature,“ Vaughn-Munck adds, laughing. He cites their 2023 production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Musical! at the Kensington Amphitheatre as an example. “It was really windy, the fog started rolling in and you could barely hear anyone!”

Despite a variety of setbacks, Berkeley Shakespeare Company has persevered, creating a safe, creative space that’s open to everyone. “Kindness, that’s number one,” Leyva says. “I don’t care if you’re Denzel Washington—if you come in and you’re unkind, then you’re someone we don’t want in our dressing rooms and rehearsal space.”

As the fledgling company celebrates four years in existence, the three founders hope to continue to grow and  experiment. “The Shakespeare catalog is so massive, there are so many great roles,” Vaughn-Munck says. “There’s so much room for exploration as we continue to push the boundaries about what a Shakespeare play looks and feels like.”

Newsome smiles. “And maybe someday we will move beyond Shakespeare to other works,” she says. “Anything can happen—as long as we continue to be a playground for actors to have fun, a place they can call home.”
