The Skygreen Leopards are an offshoot from the Jewelled Antler Collective; a group of psych-folk musicians from around the Bay Area that records under way too many pseudonyms to mention. They write songs about the ghosts of female beauties, whispering trees, swimming-hole cousins, crippled horses, and human-faced animal-saints. Their live shows are supposed to be communal gatherings of “love and friendship” that have been known to take place in smoke-filled greenhouses. Hmm. “Disciples of California” is their new track off their record of the same name, which brings to mind the kind of later Byrds’ country twang a la Gram Parsons that serves well for these crisp late-autumn nights. So break out the harmonica, slap on some cowboy boots, grow out your hair, and serenade yourself home with “Disciples of California.”
