When it comes to macaroni drenched in fromage, I’m partial to the classic approach: large tin-foil trays brimming with piping-hot mac and bubbling cheddar blend, perhaps with some bread crumbs, or something crunchy, on top. (And, sure, maybe some cheap-ass, gas station hot dogs slices buried within FTW.) Grandma used to make this on the regular, complete with a glass of milk and Nilla wafers — the perfect fat-kid lunch circa 1983. It’s tradition! Anyway, Homeroom in Oakland does these type of plates and more, since 2011, but in the coming days they’ll be taking it up a notch during National Mac+Cheese Week. From July 11-16, the mac destination will be celebrating with everything from a special Snapchat geofilter to a one-off mac ’n’ cheese-inspired beer, made by their neighbors at Temescal Brewing. Be sure to visit Homeroom’s website for deets on the food, and don’t forget to enter a contest to win free mac ’n’ cheese for a year. —Nick Miller
