One of the stranger features of our era is the way different parts of our country experience the Iraq war. Few people in the Bay Area know anyone who has served in the conflict, while communities with a stronger tradition of military service, such as in the South, feel the loss all too keenly. Last week, the East Bay got a terrible taste of the Iraq war’s human tragedy, when UC Berkeley senior and Iraq War veteran Elijah Warren fatally shot himself in his East Oakland home.
