The Mercury News goes bacon tasting, and MediaNews sibs the Oakland Tribune and Contra Costa Times tag along. Bruce Aidells, Kensington’s own Falstaffian sausage mogul, captures the romance of pork bellies: “I think bacon is essentially the meat lover’s version of chocolate,” he says. “It does the same thing to people.”

CoCo Times reader Ashley Welch reviews the cookbook Paula Deen Celebrates! Best Dishes and Best Wishes for the Best Times of Your Life. If Deen’s recipe for mashed potatoes is typical of the book, the Food Network chef with the adorable Southern accent had better celebrate while she still can. Welch can’t stifle an orgasmic shudder: “For a holiday potluck, I jumped at the chance to try out Deen’s twist on classic mashed potatoes. The title alone, Twice-Baked Potato Casserole, sold me, but it just kept getting better and better: potatoes (of course), cream cheese (hello!), sour cream (oh yes!), butter (yes, a stick ï¿½ this is Paula Deen), sharp cheddar cheese, and bacon (oh please, just kill me now!). To put it simply, it was divine.”

Shame ’em with Butylated Hydroxyanisole
There’s a big helping of outrage in Trib writer Jolene Thym’s belated reaction to last month’s news that a Virginia school administrator banned home-baked cupcakes from PTA meetings. The story became a cause celebre of right-wing commentators; among the reactions was this piece from The Center for Consumer Freedom, titled “You Can Take Our Cupcakes When You Pry Them From Our Cold, Frosting-Coated Hands.”
Thym’s prescription is less colorful: “I suggest that those in authority take a good long look at the nutritional information their next store-bought treat, then read it out loud before they serve it to their children.” Ouch!
