Faxploitation: Oakland Mayor-elect Ron Dellums Welcomes Press-Not!

Yesterday at 9:11 a.m., the transition team for Ron Dellums e-mailed a press release announcing that the Great Man would be meeting with members of his 43 different task forces at Bebee Memorial Church tonight at 6 p.m. It would have been one of the first public appearances in Oakland made by the notoriously press-averse Dellums since his election in June. We say “would have been” because twelve hours later a “corrected” press release went out saying that the press couldn’t come because it was a “working session” open only to task force members. Dellums spokeswoman Deborah Campbell-Ford took the blame for the confusion. She says she thought it was going to be an open event, but task-force conveners expressed concerns about getting any work done with the press around during their first face-to-face with Dellums. “Not everyone is comfortable expressing their opinions when the press is there,” Campbell-Ford said. Back-to-back press releases after the jump.

    PRESS OPPORTUNITY

MAYOR-ELECT RON DELLUMS TO MEET WITH TASK FORCE MEMBERS

OAKLAND, CA-Oakland Mayor-elect Ron Dellums will meet with members of his Task Forces to discuss their ideas and thank them for their input in Moving Oakland Forward, Together at an event scheduled for Wednesday, October 25, 2006, 6:00 PM at Bebee Memorial Church, located on 3900 Telegraph Avenue (between West Macarthur and 40t Street).

More than 400 members of 43 twelve different task forces and various subcommittees are expected to attend to share with the Mayor-elect information on what they have been doing and what ideas have been generated from Oakland residents during the past four months.

The task force members are representatives of the community citywide which includes individuals that were both supportive and non-supportive of the Mayor-elect. The volunteers have devoted an incredible amount of their personal time working collaboratively together to provide specifics to Dellums’ plan to make Oakland a model city.

For the past six weeks, task force members have worked through a democratic process to develop a variety of community initiatives. Implementation of those initiatives will begin in January 2007. In addition, the task forces will remain in effect throughout the Mayor-elects’ term in office.

A one-page summary and fact sheet on the Task Force activities will be available at the event. For information, contact the Dellums Transition Office.

The second press release:

ERROR CORRECTION-TASK FORCE MEETING WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 25

Earlier today, we sent out a press advisory which stated erroneously that a meeting between Advisory Task Force participants and Mayor-Elect Ron Dellums Wednesday night would be open to the press. The meeting Wednesday night is a working session that is open to Task Force participants only. We regret any confusion caused by this error.

There will be an opportunity for members of the media to attend a press availability with Mayor-Elect Dellums in the near future; in the meantime, press are invited to contact us at the numbers above for additional information.
