Educational Soap Opera Aimed at Immigrant Women

Could watching a soap opera help minority women learn English and launch their own businesses? That’s what Oakland nonprofit C.E.O. Women thinks. As reported by ABC7News.com, the organization just launched a $100,000 budget educational soap opera series fashioned on Spanish-language telenovelas in hopes of encouraging women to be self-employed. Chevron Corporation provided most of the funding for the eighteen episodes, which will be initially distributed by DVD. The half-hour dramas depict women from China, Mexico, Vietnam, and India struggling to make ends meet. But in true soap style, the producers promise “steamy” scenes, too. This is educational, after all.
