Video games seem to be the main choice of entertainment for young men and women in the 21st century. What is more, the popularity of gaming has grown among older generations as well. In the United States and Europe, for example, the number of men and women over the age of 50 who enjoy video games in their downtime is increasing.

That may have something to do with the evolution of online entertainment, as well as multiplayer gaming. It is also important to note that technological developments have a lot to do with growing success of the video game industry. This article explores the evolution of internet-based entertainment, particularly as it relates to gaming.

A Rise in iGaming

One of the most prominent genres in online entertainment right now is iGaming. For those who don’t know, iGaming refers to any form of online gambling. Gambling online in California is illegal. Know the rules in your area.  With new casino games being released on the internet every day, more and more people are finding joy in playing the classics online. But, the question is, what are the hottest trends in online gambling right now?

One of the really big ones is live dealer casinos. Often called simply “live gambling,” live dealer casinos involve using streaming services in order to create a more immersive gambling experience. A human dealer broadcasts themselves in real time, engaging the customers in some of the most popular games. Blackjack, roulette, craps and more are all available at live casinos.

The secret behind the success of live casinos has a lot to do with immersion. Many people feel like live dealers are a step closer to classic gambling halls. However, they still provide the convenience of playing online. In other words, they are the best of both worlds. Sure, they may have some downsides as well, but for the most part, they are a huge hit, and one of the main reasons behind iGaming’s success.

Streaming Services

Streaming is a key part of digital entertainment. We already talked about how it is used in gambling online; however, that is not where it originated from. As many of you know, streaming is intricately tied to film and television. Netflix, the first of the streaming services, allowed fans to choose from an ever-changing and expanding library of shows and movies, and watch them at any point during the day.

Though some people have expressed issues with Netflix and similar services, the company remains one of the most successful streaming platforms around. And, it seems, that pretty soon it is going to be expanding into the realm of gaming. Netflix has already announced its plans to launch an interactive, game-style experience on its platform.

For those who don’t know, an interactive show/film is a movie or series in which the watcher chooses what is going to happen next. The viewer is given an option between multiple choices that a character can make and then sees what happens once they’ve made his or her choice. Of course, the fan’s choice heavily influences the course of the story.

To call these shows video games would not exactly be accurate. But there is also no denying that gaming has not influenced the concept here. Perhaps we could chalk this up to another example of gamificationthat is taking over modern media and pop culture. We can see the effects of gamification in novels, online gambling and even in film.

Online Gaming

According to peer-research polls, there are currently over 4.5 billion internet users all over the world. The users engage with songs, films, online video content and of course, with video games. Knowing this, it shouldn’t come as a shock that online gaming has become such a huge hit. Around 2023, it was still accurate to say that video games were a young man’s game. However, a lot has changed in the past two years.

According to the latest statistics, the amount of people who use the internet more than a couple of hours a day has significantly increased, especially among older generations. It is also accurate to say that the number of people who are over 40 that game has also increased. Older players are specifically looking for cooperative, calming games that allow them to socialize, build a sense of community and relax after a long day of work.

On the other hand, the competitive scene is also growing in popularity. League of Legends is a prime example of this. The success of the television show Arcane has attracted a lot of new players to League of Legends. The game’s popularity has skyrocketed, and its professional scene is thriving. In fact, eSports in general has drastically grown in popularity and is now a huge hit among fans and gamers.

Mobile Gaming

In 2025, most of us don’t have the time to sit down at the computer and play a game. We are constantly on the go, commuting to work, taking walks or even hanging out with friends. However, the good news is that we don’t need to sit down at a PC, because we all have a miniature computer in our back pockets. Of course, we are talking about smartphones.

Smartphones nowadays have the capacity to run some of the best games in the world. No longer are mobile games limited to simple affairs like Tetris, Pac-Man or Snake. Instead, there are complex strategy games, multiplayer role-playing games and hardcore, lore-filled fantasy adventure games. A particularly successful genre is the gacha game, of which the most well-known title is Genshin Impact

The best part about most mobile games is that they are free to play. Fans can download these games from their preferred app, whether that be the Google Play Store or the Apple App Store. Then, it is a simple matter of creating an account and booting up the game. Though it may not seem like it, fans nowadays sink hours into improving their score in mobile gaming, which is why the hobby is such a hit.
