.Dellums Does Something Stupid Again

Maybe it’s time to turn Ron Dellums’ tenure as mayor into a drinking game: every time he says something stupid, or refuses to make a decision, or threatens to take a job with Hillary Clinton and leave this ungrateful city in his dust, you take a shot. Friday was worth at least a tequila double. Here’s the sequence of events that afternoon. First Dellums announces that former BART cop Johannes Mehserle was released after posting bond. Then he announced that he was wrong. Then he denounced the judge’s decision to let Mehserle post bail in the first place, claiming that the public is still filled with “justifiable outrage,” and that releasing him would pose a danger to public safety. In comes the Oakland Tribune with a bevy of lawyers who say what we already know: judges don’t have the legal authority to keep someone in jail someone on that basis. And in comes Chip Johnson to call Dellums a holdover from the 1960s, who’s more at home making impassioned speeches than adult decisions. Another day, another gem from our mayor.
