Former President Bill Clinton displayed his formidable diplomatic skills in securing the release of two Bay Area journalists who were convicted and sentenced to twelve years of hard labor in North Korea. According to news reports, Clinton scored a pardon of the journalists and then whisked them away on a private jet, following his 24-hour whirlwind stop in North Korea. Clinton’s secret trip apparently had the blessing of the Obama administration. Some Republicans are criticizing Clinton for allegedly giving credibility to the rogue North Korean regime by talking with them, but it’s pretty clear that if it were not for the former president, journalists Laura Ling and Euna Lee of San Francisco-based Current TV would be in a communist gulag for years to come.
