As you stroll through Oakland’s Chinatown, you may have noticed an innocuous building on 7th Street: the Kar Mee Fortune Cookie Factory. How nice, you may have thought, food processing. I eat food, so I’m happy it’s being processed. But last night, the Trib reported, as an electrical fire tore through the building, and firefighters raced to the scene, the Kar Mee’s awful secret was revealed. Authorities discovered about half a million bucks worth of pot plants, some 1,000 plants in all, inside the building. And it hasn’t been used as a fortune cookie factory in years, it turns out! You lied to us, fortune cookie factory! How could you?
