Pretty soon, the city of Berkeley should include a trip to Funky Door Yoga as a tourist stop. The word of mouth on this place is rivaled only by Krispy Kreme doughnuts. It’s the largest, the best, the hottest yoga studio ever, we were told more than once. We’ll see about that, we said. But you know, Funky Door does something wonderful: It doesn’t take itself too seriously, like some yoga types we’ve all run into in the past. At Funky Door, we were reminded, beginners don’t get a special class — everyone is lumped into the yoga experience together. Playful decorations adorn the walls and locutions remind visitors that “A regular yoga practice gives you a great butt” and also “lengthens your member.” Ed Renfro, the studio’s resident artist, reminds visitors to keep criticisms of his artwork to themselves. “Your ideas are mostly terrible,” he writes. “You should stick to your area of expertise — yoga!” The Funky Door experience makes it worth telling a friend.
