Most sports bars concentrate on the holy trinity of football, basketball, and baseball (with a little soccer and hockey thrown in), but the Up & Under is dedicated first, last, and always to the great American sport of … rugby? Rugby jerseys, rugby paintings, rugby posters and all manner of rugby paraphernalia cover every square inch of wall space. Back issues of Rugby and Rugby World are available for perusal. The flat-screen above the bar is tuned to the Rugby Channel more or less exclusively; even the light fixtures are crafted from re-sewn rugby balls. Owner/rugby player Nathan Trivers has channeled his enthusiasm for the sport into a friendly, laid-back hangout with well-crafted cocktails; good food (try the filet mignon sliders); and a diverse crowd of hipsters, families, kids, and grownups. “North America’s first and only rugby pub” is a fine sipping option even if you don’t know the difference between a winger, a flanker, a scrum, and a hooker.
