Best Purveyor of Local Crafts

FiveTen Studio

Custom-designed audio components made from recycled or scavenged
furniture hardwoods may sound pretty esoteric and out of step with
truth-to-materials industrial design principles, but the high-end
turntables and other components made by Audiowood’s Joel Scilley, on
display at Alfonso Dominguez’s and Sean Matthews’ FiveTen Studio, a
gallery/store dedicated to the work of local designers, may stimulate a
certain techno-lust in the savage male breast that is not normally
fixated on LP paraphernalia. You have been forewarned. The organic
forms of redwood burl juxtapose nicely with the polished components of
walnut, oak, ebony, ziricote, pecan, brass, and copper — and the
tonearms and platters by Rega, Origin Live, or Teres and speakers by
Audioengine. The exposed mechanicals become part of the “performance
art” furniture-sculpture — artifacts that “sound great, that work
well, and that enhance musical experiences with their absolutely unique
character,” to quote Scilley. Also on display: artists’ books and
limited-edition furniture.
