Let’s be honest. Curry is such a dominant ingredient that too often curry dishes can all taste the same. “Green curry with ….” “Red curry…” After those words, it often doesn’t matter. So it’s incredibly refreshing that a curry dish brings something to the plate that makes you stop and pay attention. Nestled in Point Richmond (an East Bay gem of its own), Kao Sarn Thai is unassuming and it’s hard to find something on the menu that disappoints. However, its pumpkin curry is enough to carry the menu on its own. A mild curry, with a little spice, pairs with large chunks of pumpkin that fall apart in your mouth like unstable mashed potatoes. The bits of pumpkin are only slightly sweet so they give a nice contrast to the heat without causing too much confusion. When poured over Jasmine rice, the soft pumpkin also serves as a unique texture against chewy rice, crunchy vegetables, and a tough protein. Ideal as an autumn treat, the dish is always a welcome change from the common curry.
