Our president’s favorite painting is W.H.D. Koerner’s “A Charge to Keep,” a Remington-style depiction, according to the Decider, of the galloping cowboy (who resembles W and with whom W identifies) as Methodist bringer of gospel. In fact, it depicts a horse thief fleeing justice. If only some of us had learned the lessons of history, even art history! Doug Minkler uses his considerable artistic skills to make sure that we do get it; he has made political satire, that art-world taboo, the cornerstone of his unorthodox career — and crusade, if we can redeem that sullied word. Minkler’s screenprinted posters, infused with wonderful bite, verve and color, are editorial cartoons elevated to the level of fine art. He writes: “Corporations want artists to glorify their wars, their products & their philosophies. I make posters for my own preservation, that is, planetary preservation. My prints are inspired not by rugged individualism, but by the collective humor, defiance, & lust for life exhibited by those on the margins.” Minkler makes his work available at low or no cost, and he is active in fund-raising for progressive nonprofits.
