Who wouldn’t want to get lost in a potted-plant jungle for a couple of hours? In times of yore, all you had to do was walk down tiny Heinz Street in West Berkeley, and Magic Gardens provided all the diversion a dreamer could want. Perennials — our favorites — are in ample supply here, as well as ferns, trees, succulents, and flowers. Best of all, if you’re having a plant emergency (say, your deep-orange potentilla develops dusty white mold), feel free to call the Magic Gardens staff, who will helpfully talk you down from the ledge. (In our case, pruning shears saved the day — and the plant.) But be warned: In the coming months, the plant paradise on Heinz is planning to up and move to new digs in El Cerrito, where it will join Berkeley expatriate American Soil Products and the Urban Farmer to form a triumvirate: the Garden Source Center.
