.Best Place to Take Visitors: Near-death experience

Mountain View Cemetery

By day, the Mountain View Cemetery is a gorgeous, intriguing, and quieting place for a stroll. If your out-of-town friends are up for a good hike, you can spend an entire day wandering within this gated domain of the departed. It’s also the resting place for a who’s who of old Oaktown history: On the upper tiers, where the big tombs sit, you’ll find the namesakes of local hospitals, lakes, and parks — Kaisers, Merritts, and Tildens. But if your friends are of a slightly more eccentric and daring variety, a wilder way to experience this beautiful old graveyard is by the light of a full moon. Sure, you’ll have to hop the fence and elude the private security service that sometimes makes the rounds after sunset. But the cemetery is so vast and filled with hiding places that you can easily avoid the brightly lit security SUV. Bring your camera along and snap some groovy goth photos of your friends lying on top of graves. And don’t forget flowers to appease any ghosts you might offend.
