Best Place to Pick Up Dot-Com Spoils

The computer gear category of local nonprofit marketplace craigslist might also qualify as Worst Place to Unload Dot-Com Spoils, but if you’re looking to buy, you’ve definitely www’d to the right place. Just about every poor sap who received a PowerBook and a Palm in lieu of severance pay when the dot-conomy went all to hell has been trying to pawn them off to cover that one-way ticket home to Kansas. And since the PC industry has been doing essentially the same thing on the corporate retail level for the past year or two, the result is an unbelievable glut of used equipment. On April 2, for instance, 225 new listings went up in this category. The next day, 295 more were posted. Yow! Believe it or not, this is typical — the poor seller hardly has a chance. Laptops or complete desktop systems often go for $500 or less, many scanners and printers fetch well under $50, and 17″ monitors are snapped up for as little as $40. The listings are easy to search by item or location of seller, and all prices are negotiable. If you feel bad about taking advantage of jobless techies, just consider how the Internet bubble affected your rent. That guilt will dissipate as fast as bits through a T-1 line.
