The year 2001 has been a stellar one for new restaurants, and unlike San Francisco, the East Bay hasn’t begun to hit its saturation point for temples of haute cuisine. But of all the great new eateries in the region, we have to single out Zaika. Related to the popular Breads of India, it just takes Indian cuisine — something we’re not short on here — to a higher gastronomic plane (where it belongs). Chef-owner Rohit Singh is putting out some of the freshest, boldest, most exciting regional Indian cuisine we’ve ever tasted. Now if he could only do something about the lines outside the door….
