We’ve had terribly romantic meals at Mazzini, regardless of whom we were dining with — and that’s a definite compliment. The lights gleam golden in the handsome redwood room, which whispers “Italy” seductively instead of screaming it in red, white, and green. From bruschetta to semifreddo, the food’s clear, clean flavors combine in simple, effective ways — the best of Cal-Italian cuisine. We’re particularly partial to the substantial roast calamari salad. Mazzini also boasts one of the region’s best Italian-oriented wine lists. Though a meal is a bit of a splurge, say $40 to $50 a person with wine and dessert, the prices could be much higher.
