Maybe it’s the beer talking (ten-plus varieties on tap, including, of course, Guinness), but this place has actually managed to make pub food taste great, especially shepherd’s pie. It’s also a good place to spread out with a game and some pals, or cozy up next to the fire with a book and a pint. This is one of the few bars in Berkeley that actually have atmosphere, which is no surprise because the owners have tried to re-create a community pub where people can relax and get loaded in a fine Irish tradition. Beckett’s has a somewhat Tudor vibe, low lighting with rich, dark wood, a grand Elizabethan staircase, three stories of seating areas, and some right attractive wenches to serve you. Although the live entertainment can squelch intimate conversation, check out the Irish music every Sunday from the band Fun with Finnoula, and the Brain Teaser pub trivia on Tuesdays.
