99 Ranch Market

For variety, you just can’t beat an Asian supermarket, and 99 Ranch is about as super as it gets. Where else can you pick up a jar of spaghetti sauce in one aisle and shrimp chips in the next? Unlike the more traditional Asian grocery stores, 99 Ranch is big enough to embrace some Western foods along with its staggering array of Asian foods. For seafood lovers, there is no better place to shop for dinner. The fish is so fresh because just moments ago it was swimming in a tank displayed in front of you. Vegetarians will feel at home as well, or at least come across some, well, interesting options such as vegetarian ears and kidneys, faux barbecue pork, and fake sausage. What this megastore lacks in character, it stocks in quantity and variety, offering pre-bagged bunches of leafy greens, rice cracker snacks, canned shark fin soup, every known vegetable pickled in a jar, and lots of savory sauces. The closest location is in Pacific East Shopping Mall in Richmond. But if you’ve got some time on your hands, try making the pilgrimage out to the Milpitas location, which has its own deli and bakery, as well as an impressive bunch of housewares.
