For those of us who grew up in California, grits are not only delicious, but exotic. And now this Southern delight has arrived in Temescal, as part of the menu at Aunt Mary’s Cafe on Telegraph. These grits have got just the right texture: soft but substantive. They stick to the fork but go down easy. Try them with greens, or order add-ons like roasted tomatoes, cheese, or smoked bacon. From whence does this ambrosia come? Dallas native Jack Stewart opened Aunt Mary’s a few years ago and named it for his Georgia-born and -bred maternal aunt; he himself is a twenty-year veteran chef who’s done stints at Aqua and Rose Pistola in San Francisco. As for the restaurant, it has a similar feel to the grits — mellow and smooth — plus a friendly waitstaff and a roomy dining area. There’s nothing gritty about Aunt Mary’s, just lush plates of creamy cornmeal.
