Never mind fancy ice-cream flavors and mix-ins — the Italians got it right the first time with their version of cold, sweet, creamy goodness, otherwise known as gelato. Gelato is a close cousin of ice cream, but a little creamier, softer, and usually more intense in flavor. Berkeley’s Gelateria Naia outdoes some of Italy’s own G-spots with its quality and selection. With more than thirty flavors and patient servers who’ll let you taste a number of selections before settling on your choice, you can’t go wrong. Pear, fig, black sesame, and cinnamon are among the more unusual flavors. For those less daring with their frozen delicacies, there are probably five variations on chocolate and a plethora of fruit and other flavors to choose from. The only drawback is licking your gelato on Shattuck rather than some romantic back street in Rome.
