Best Chinese Breakfast

Tian Jin Dumplings

For those who have spent time living in cities such as Taipei or Beijing, some of the most longed-after foods aren’t things like high-end dim sum or elaborate seafood banquets — you can find passable versions of those in the Bay Area if you know where to look. Some of the best food experiences you can have in China are the dirt-cheap, infinitely satisfying street-food breakfasts, which, until Tian Jin Dumplings opened in Oakland’s Chinatown last year, were practically non-existent in these parts. Hit up this little takeout window first thing in the morning for ridiculously inexpensive steamed pork buns, sweet soy milk, and, best of all, jianbing guozi, or giant egg-coated crepes that are stuffed with Chinese fried crullers, savory soybean paste, and pickled mustard stems. There isn’t a better way to kick-start your day.
