We all have trust issues, and nothing tweaks them like car repair. The
grouchy guy turns the thingamajig and twists the hoozy whatzit, and
$800 later the engine’s still making that funny noise. But you and your
vehicle can be assured of healing at Berkeley’s Oceanworks and its
sister garage-around-the-corner, Oceanworks II (each shop handles a
different set of makes). After nearly thirty years in business, owner
Angus Powelson has perfected a friendly, no-nonsense approach to the
automotive arts, fixing what’s broken — and never what’s not
— using only top-quality parts, and suggesting multiple repair
options that make you an active decision-maker in your car’s upkeep.
All that and a fair price, too. Go figure. The garage’s full name is
Oceanworks Japanese Car Repair, but they also work on all American
makes, a few European ones, and Mini Coopers. Call ahead to reserve one
of the well-priced in-house rental cars, which have racked up about
120,000 miles each — your car might, too, if you entrust it to
Oceanworks.
