As soon as you enter Tip Top Bike Shop, it’s clear that this is a family-owned and family-friendly business. That’s because these days, husband-and-wife store owners Richard and Charlotte Oelerich regularly bring their adorable nine-month-old girl to work. But the baby has not slowed down the Temescal bike shop, which, despite its location in hipster central, has remained unpretentious and inviting to cyclists of all levels. The Oakland couple opened their neighborhood shop in 2007; now, the store has a small crew of dedicated cyclists on staff who are passionate about bikes without being condescending toward newbies and amateurs. The shop is oriented to everyday riders, as opposed to racers, and offers a relaxed environment for cyclists to discuss repairs or purchases with knowledgeable and approachable cycling experts. And the shop’s repairs are relatively affordable and usually pretty quick, even on busy weekends. The owners also offer free adjustments for any bike purchased at Tip Top.
