A modest fellow, he doesn’t need any fancy name — he’s just That 1 Guy. Perhaps he chose the name because he knows he isn’t the real star of his one-man band. Instead, people come to gawk at the Magic Pipe — seven feet of tripped-out drainage pipe rigged up with strings, switches, and pedals like something out of a grade-B sci-fi flick. The Magic Pipe started as an experiment when Walnut Creek bass player Mike Silverman — aka That 1 Guy — began a solo act in his quest for “a bigger sound.” Galvanized steel pipe fit the bill. In his live shows, the Magic Pipe churns out thumping porn movie rhythms, taking on a life of its own as it slides open like a trombone or spews clouds of steam in a low-rent special-effects extravaganza. But That Guy’s contribution shouldn’t be overlooked, when he sings along with that groovy, funkadelic sound, jabbering evil nonsense songs about “Weasel Pot Pies” and “Steaming Hunks of Hot Love Chunks.” They make an impressive team, pipe and guy.
