With a name like Delicious Food Company, you know you can’t go wrong. This Cantonese bakery, located in the heart of Oakland’s Chinatown, sits at what seems to be the busiest intersection in all of Oakland. Yup, it’s right at 8th and Webster streets, home to a super-crosswalk where all traffic stops and pedestrians are allowed to cross any way they want — even diagonally. But back to the bakery — egg custards and chicken pies and sweet buns, oh my! Mooncakes, those dense, elaborate lunar New Year specialties, usually run $4 apiece, but you can sample mini ones at Delicious Foods for less than $1 each all year round. The bakery has a large steamer for some dim sum items. When making your visit, make sure you look beyond the display cases. Many items, such as the fragrant baked barbecue pork buns and sweet coconut buns, cool on baking racks in the back and never make it to the cases.
